Phoenix Hospital Radio News

July 2010

After being elected Station Manager back in February 2009 Steve Cooper continues to keep the station ticking over smoothly and is enjoying the tasks involved.

This year has brought about several changes within PHR, with changing committee roles; Michael Brotherton is now heading up Fundraising whilst Sarah Kent has stepped in to Michael’s old role of Membership Secretary. Another change of course has been the website, which is now kept up to date and is generally much more accessible, this is thanks to our new Web Master Tom Buck.

One of the bigger changes within the station is the end of an era with us finally stopping our disco and outside broadcast services, more information about why this particular change needed to take place can be found on the link at the top of this page.

New members continue to apply and we have several new shows going out, meaning we now have live shows every day of the week and on some days there are up to three of these.

no cd's

Within the studio itself due to changing times like many others we are steering away from hard copy music and using ‘The Wall’ much more, and no more vinyl or CD based music is being brought in or purchased, this should help with space as vinyl creates a big storage problem for us.

February 2009

The team at Phoenix Hospital Radio were delighted to announce the election of a new station Manager in February 2009. The previous manager "Twiggy (Chris Twigg)" handed the reins over after a long and happy service of eight years at the helm, to Steve Cooper known to the team and listeners as "Cooperman".

Steve Cooper

Steve made a presentation to Twiggy at the League of Friends/ Phoenix Radio AGM in February 2009. A certificate was also presented to Chris by the League of Friends chairman Pauline Spratt in recognition of his long service. Steve Cooper, who has been a technical officer and presenter at Phoenix for many years, is thriving in his new role and excited about future prospects for the station and hoping to be out and about in the Burton area with the rest of the team raising awareness and funds for the patients at The Queens Hospital Burton.

The radio is a free service to patients and provides entertainment 24 hours a day with live request shows in the evenings. The radio also has an outside broadcast team who are very popular at local events and private functions.

The Phoenix team would like to thank those wards and staff who are returning used headsets and in particular to Lyndsey Tilley on ward 7 who never fails us. We can't keep saying enough how important this is as there are NO DISPOSABLE headsets issued - all parts except foam tips are recyclable and must be returned to the radio for cleaning. The headsets cost £4.00 each so if thrown away it is a major expense and could lead to shortages for patients.

If you would like us to play a piece of music, supply or collect a headset for a patient or relative in the hospital please call the studio on (01283) 566333 Ext 5025.
